PresbyLASIK (also known as multifocal LASIK) is a laser eye surgery, which can help patients achieve clear vision at all distances. "Presby" in the title refers to the "Presbyopia," progressive loss of reading vision, which affects people over 45 years. "LASIK" in the title refers to the traditional LASIK, laser surgery, which is used to treat myopia, Hyperopia and astigmatism. How does it work?
PresbyLASIK is working to change the shape of the cornea. Unlike traditional LASIK, which improves the vision in only one distance, improves the presbyLASIK the vision in several distances. In practice, however, the brain is often difficult to combine images, and the result is blurred vision, or even double vision.
PresbyLASIK works otherwise. It changes the shape of both corneas in the same way. Therefore, multiple zones vision are generated on both of the cornea. The brain has to learn something new, because it's bringing more zones as seen through glasses ophthalmic or progressive.
When will it be available in the United States?
While the PresbyLASIK clinical trials, it is hard to tell when the FDA will grant its consent, and for what types of patients. Patients interested in PresbyLASIK, currently can obtain this procedure write in a clinical trial, or to travel to another country. This is similar to what happened during the development of satinského laser eye. For example, PRK, LASEK and Epi-LASIK were all first approved in Europe and later received approval for use in the United States.
